🦮 Large · Belgium
The Belgian Malinois is a high-energy, hardworking herding dog with a strong drive that needs intensive daily work, clear tasks, and experienced, consistent leadership.

The Malinois is highly intelligent, alert, and extremely eager to work, with a pronounced herding and prey drive. He bonds closely with his handler and is sensitive to the mood around him. Without clear tasks he can become restless or prone to displacement behaviours.
This breed needs several hours of intensive physical and mental activity daily, such as protection sport, mantrailing, or herding work. The Malinois is widely used by police and rescue services, which illustrates his high workload capacity. Without sufficient activity he frequently develops behavioural problems such as destructiveness.
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing, with heavier shedding in spring and autumn. Nail and dental care are part of the standard routine. Given his high activity level, adequate recovery and joint protection during growth should be ensured.
The Malinois is not suited to inexperienced owners, since his extremely high drive and energy level require experienced, consistent, and time-intensive handling. Without a suitable task and outlet, the breed frequently develops behavioural problems. He suits active dog-sport enthusiasts or working-dog handlers best.
As a herding breed, the Malinois can carry the MDR1 gene mutation, which causes severe intolerance to certain medications (e.g. ivermectin); genetic testing before administering medication is recommended. Hip and elbow dysplasia also occur. Regular joint checks and breeding screenings are advised.
