🦮 Large · Afghanistan
An elegant, independent sighthound with a strong hunting drive and an elaborate, silky coat that should only run free within securely fenced areas, never unsecured.

The Afghan Hound is independent, dignified, and reserved with strangers, affectionate toward its family in its own understated way. Classic obedience holds little interest for it, and it often acts on its own judgment.
As a sighthound, it needs opportunities for short, fast sprints; off-leash freedom is only advisable in fenced areas because of its hunting drive. Clearly visible ribs are normal for this sighthound build, not a sign of being underweight.
The long, silky coat requires thorough brushing several times a week to prevent matting. Regular bathing is part of routine coat care.
Its independence and strong hunting drive make reliable off-leash obedience difficult, which calls for experience handling sighthounds. The considerable grooming commitment should also be realistically factored in.
Breed-typical conditions can include hip dysplasia and an inherited cataract. Because of their low body fat, Afghan Hounds are sensitive to certain anesthetics, which should be flagged to the vet beforehand.
