Where can my dog run off leash in Hanover?
In designated dog parks and off-leash areas, a dog is generally allowed to run free; that is what they are for. Outside these areas, local rules apply, and they differ from city to city: leash requirements are regulated at the state level in Germany and supplemented by individual municipalities.
Roughly between March 1 and July 15 is also the breeding and nesting season (Brut- und Setzzeit). Several German states tighten leash requirements in forests and fields during this period to protect young wildlife. On-site signage always takes precedence.
Regardless of the leash: dog owners are generally strictly liable for any damage their dog causes, under Section 833 of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch, BGB), meaning liability applies even without fault. Dog liability insurance is mandatory in some German states anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many dog parks are there in Hanover?
In Hanover and the surrounding area, we have listed 14 named dog parks and off-leash areas, including Georgengarten, Hundewiese Eilenriede, Hunde-Auslauffläche, Hunde FunPark Hannover, Hundefreilauffläche. An additional 8 areas are listed without their own name and are only visible on the map in the app.
Can my dog run off leash in a dog park?
In designated off-leash areas, generally yes: that is what they are set up for. Some municipalities attach conditions, such as requiring a leash for dogs that do not get along with others, or separate areas for small and large dogs. The signage at the entrance is what counts.
Is there a general leash requirement in Hanover?
Leash rules are set at the state level and supplemented locally, so there is no single nationwide answer. Many cities require leashes in parks and the city center and designate separate off-leash areas for that purpose, the ones listed on this page. During the breeding and nesting season, roughly from March to July, stricter rules often apply in forests and fields.
