🐕 Medium · Mexico
The Xoloitzcuintle is an ancient Mexican dog, usually hairless, bred in three size varieties, with a calm, watchful temperament and close attachment to family life.
The Xoloitzcuintle is calm, alert and closely bonded to its family, reserved and watchful toward strangers. It is considered adaptable and relatively quiet.
Its exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and play are usually sufficient, as the breed is not an extreme athlete.
The hairless variety needs sun protection in summer and protection from cold in winter, plus regular skin care against blackheads and sunburn. The coated variety, by contrast, is low-maintenance.
The calm, adaptable nature makes it generally suitable for beginners, though the skin care and sun protection needed by the hairless variety require some extra effort.
The hairless variety often has missing teeth and skin prone to acne and sun damage. Otherwise the breed is considered robust and healthy.
