The Wire Fox Terrier is a lively, bold terrier with a wiry coat and a strong hunting drive that needs consistent leadership, plenty of exercise, and regular mental work.
The Wire Fox Terrier is spirited, confident, and always in motion, with a pronounced protective streak toward his family. He reacts quickly and impulsively, especially around game or small animals. He can be domineering toward other dogs, particularly of the same sex.
This breed needs extensive daily exercise plus targeted mental work, as walking alone isn't enough. It does well in dog sports such as agility, earthdog trials, or supervised digging. Without sufficient outlets, the Fox Terrier tends toward destructive behaviour.
The wiry coat needs hand-stripping two to three times a year to preserve its typical texture; clipping is possible as an alternative but changes the coat's appearance. Regular brushing prevents matting, especially on the beard and legs. Nail care is important, as the breed digs actively.
The Wire Fox Terrier is only conditionally suited to inexperienced owners, since his strong hunting drive and stubbornness call for consistent, experienced handling. Early socialisation with other dogs and small pets is essential. Active owners with terrier experience get on well with this breed.
Breed-typical conditions include lens luxation, deafness associated with predominantly white coats, and patellar luxation. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (femoral head necrosis) also occurs more frequently in smaller terrier breeds. Regular eye and hearing checks are recommended.
