🐕 Medium · United Kingdom (Wales)
An enduring flushing dog with a friendly nature and a strong drive to move, prone to frustration as a hunting dog without regular outlets.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is friendly, affectionate, and eager to work, with a keen interest in scent and flushing work. He is considered less exuberant than the English Springer Spaniel but remains an active, task-oriented gundog. He is loyal and devoted to his family.
As a classic flushing and retrieving dog, the breed needs daily, extensive exercise as well as activities that engage nose and mind, such as tracking or dummy training. Short walks alone don't meet his exercise needs.
The silky, moderately long coat with feathering on the ears, legs, and tail needs brushing several times a week to prevent matting. The drop ears require regular checks for infection.
Because of the pronounced need for exercise and engagement, the breed suits active, hunting-oriented owners better than absolute beginners. Without appropriate outlets, frustration can show up as restlessness.
Reported conditions include hip dysplasia, various eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and cataracts, as well as ear infections favored by the drop ears. Regular ear checks and cleaning are recommended.
