Temperament & character

The Tyrolean Hound is friendly, good-natured, and people-oriented, but tireless, independent, and loudly vocal once on the hunt. It is generally open and not especially shy with strangers.

Exercise & stimulation

As a versatile hunting dog with a keen nose, it needs long, demanding daily exercise and tracking work, otherwise it will find its own occupation by roaming. Off-leash freedom is limited by its pronounced hunting drive.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing. The long drop ears should be checked regularly to prevent infections.

Suitable for beginners?

The breed's strong hunting drive and tendency to bay loudly call for experienced hunting-dog owners with adequate space, making it barely suitable for beginners.

Health & common problems

The breed is considered robust and healthy, with few known breed-specific disorders. Because of its drop ears, it should be monitored regularly for ear infections.

Good with: Experienced hunters and active rural households
