🐕🦺 X-Large · Japan
The Tosa Inu is a massive Japanese molosser originally bred for dog fighting and classified as a restricted breed in many countries.

The Tosa Inu is calm and affectionate with its family, but is considered highly dominant toward other dogs and needs confident leadership. Its origins as a fighting dog still shape a pronounced protective and dominance drive today. It tends to be reserved to watchful toward strangers.
Exercise needs are moderate, but daily walks and consistent structure are important to keep this powerful breed balanced. Contact with unfamiliar dogs should be carefully managed given its tendency toward rivalry. Calm, consistent engagement suits it better than exciting play.
The short coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Given its body weight, joints should be protected and not overtaxed during growth. Otherwise, grooming needs are low.
The Tosa Inu is classified as a restricted breed with ownership requirements in many countries and regions of Germany, and given its size, dominance, and fighting-dog history, it is clearly not a breed for beginners. It requires very experienced, consistent owners.
As a large breed, the Tosa Inu is prone to hip dysplasia and bloat, which makes several small meals advisable. Overall, the breed is considered comparatively robust.
