🐕 Medium · Germany
A robust, watchful schnauzer with a strong work drive and pronounced protective instinct, requiring clear leadership and regular mental stimulation to stay balanced.

The Standard Schnauzer is intelligent, brave, and deeply devoted to its family, but initially reserved toward strangers. It has a strong protective instinct and needs clear rules.
The Standard Schnauzer requires plenty of exercise plus cognitive tasks such as scent or obedience work, or it tends toward restlessness. Dog sports like protection work or agility suit it well.
The wiry coat needs regular hand-stripping or professional trimming every eight to twelve weeks. The beard and eyebrows collect dirt and should be cleaned frequently.
The Standard Schnauzer is only conditionally suited to inexperienced owners, since it needs consistent leadership, stimulation, and socialisation. With dog experience or professional support, it is manageable.
Breed-typical conditions include hip dysplasia and various autoimmune skin disorders. Regular eye and joint checks are recommended.
