🐕🦺 X-Large · Ukraine/Russia
A massive livestock guardian dog from the steppes of Eastern Europe with a dense, shaggy white coat, traditionally defending flocks against wolves on its own initiative.

The South Russian Shepherd Dog is territorial, wary of strangers, and possesses a very pronounced protective instinct. It is loyal and protective toward its family, but can react quickly and aggressively toward unfamiliar people.
As a livestock guardian it prefers to patrol its territory independently rather than cover long distances, though it still needs sufficient space to move. Classic obedience training takes a back seat to its independent protective behavior.
The dense, shaggy coat needs brushing several times a week, and daily during shedding season, to prevent matting. Given its size and protective instinct, a large, securely fenced property is essential.
The pronounced protective instinct and size make this breed unsuitable for beginners; only experienced owners with livestock-guardian-dog knowledge should consider it.
Like many very large breeds, it is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia as well as bloat. Life expectancy is moderate, typical for a dog of this size.
