🐾 Small · Belgium
A compact Belgian watchdog with a pronounced protective instinct and high alertness, requiring firm leadership and sufficient occupation.

The Schipperke is watchful, wary of strangers, and strongly bonded to its family. It shows a marked protective instinct and tends toward independent behavior.
The breed is lively and needs tasks beyond walks, such as searching or retrieving games. Under-stimulation quickly leads to excessive barking or digging.
The dense, harsh coat sheds heavily seasonally, requiring more frequent brushing during coat change. Otherwise, coat care is straightforward.
Only conditionally suited to beginners, since its independent character requires consistent, early socialization and training. Inexperienced owners often underestimate its watchdog and exercise drive.
Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and occasionally the hereditary disorder MPS IIIB (mucopolysaccharidosis) have been described. A DNA test for MPS IIIB is recommended for breeding stock.
