🐕🦺 X-Large · Switzerland
A very large, good-natured mountain and rescue dog from the Swiss Alps, whose size and weight call for experienced handling.

The Saint Bernard is calm, good-natured and remarkably fond of children, friendly rather than wary toward strangers. Despite its imposing size, it shows little aggression and is regarded as a gentle giant.
Exercise needs are moderate; long, calm walks matter more than athletic peak performance. Especially as a puppy and young dog, joints should be spared through short, adapted activity.
The coat comes in short- and long-haired varieties and needs regular brushing, especially during shedding season. Facial skin folds and heavy drooling call for additional cleaning.
Because of its enormous size, weight and specific health risks, better suited to experienced owners with sufficient space. The comparatively short lifespan should be considered before getting one.
As a giant breed with a deep chest, there's an elevated risk of gastric torsion, and hip and elbow dysplasia along with heart conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy occur frequently. Entropion and ectropion of the eyelids also occur.
