🐕 Medium · France (Vendée)
A cheerful French scenthound with a shaggy coat and short legs, originally bred to hunt small game through dense undergrowth.
The PBGV is playful, sociable, and usually gets along well with other dogs, yet independent and occasionally stubborn. Its cheerful, often clownish nature makes it an entertaining family dog.
As a scenthound it eagerly follows trails and can tune out its surroundings when an interesting scent appears, so training for safe off-leash exercise is essential. It needs generous daily exercise and nose work to stay balanced.
The rough, shaggy coat needs regular brushing and occasional trimming to prevent matting. Its ears should be checked regularly because of the dense coat.
Its independent hunting instinct and stubbornness call for patient, consistent training, so some dog experience is helpful.
Common conditions include epilepsy and eye problems such as primary lens luxation, and hip dysplasia occurs occasionally despite the breed's small size. Overall, though, the breed is considered fairly robust and long-lived.
