Perro de Presa Canario: Size, Weight & Temperament

The Presa Canario is confident, calm and very devoted to its family, naturally wary and watchful toward strangers. Its strong protective instinct requires consistent, early socialization, otherwise wariness can turn into unwanted aggression toward people or dogs. It's usually patient with children in its own family but remains a dog with considerable physical power.

Exercise needs are moderate; daily extended walks and mental stimulation are usually enough, and the breed doesn't require extreme endurance sport. Consistent training and leadership matter more than sheer activity, since the Presa Canario can become domineering without clear structure. Its compact build makes it only moderately heat-tolerant.

The short, low-maintenance coat needs only occasional brushing, but training demands far more effort: the Presa Canario needs an experienced owner providing clear, force-free leadership from puppyhood. In many countries, and in several German states, it's classified as a restricted breed subject to temperament testing and leash requirements.

Like many large molosser breeds, the Presa Canario is prone to hip dysplasia and other joint problems as well as gastric torsion. Regular veterinary checkups, several small meals instead of one large one, and moderate growth during puppyhood reduce the risks.
