🐾 Small · France/Belgium
A small, eager-to-learn companion dog with distinctive butterfly ears, agile and alert, needing mental stimulation despite its small size.

The Papillon is considered alert, sociable, and remarkably eager to learn. It shows little fearfulness for its size and often carries itself with confidence.
Despite its small size, its need for exercise and activity is moderate to high, and it excels at dog sports such as agility or trick dog training. Daily walks combined with mental work are recommended.
The silky, medium-length coat rarely mats, though regular brushing keeps it looking its best. The large upright ears should occasionally be checked for cleanliness.
Well suited to beginners, being eager to learn and adaptable. Consistent but gentle training prevents the excessive barking to which the breed can be prone.
Patellar luxation and a predisposition to open fontanelles in puppies have been described. Dental problems caused by the small jaw structure are common, making regular dental checks worthwhile.
