🐕 Medium · Norway
The Norwegian Buhund is a cheerful, watchful Nordic herding and guard dog with an independent character, high exercise needs, and a close bond with its family.

The Norwegian Buhund was kept as an all-purpose farm, herding, and guard dog on Norwegian farms and is correspondingly independent, alert, and self-assured. It is very devoted to its family but likes to think for itself when given a task rather than obeying blindly.
The breed needs a great deal of daily exercise and mental stimulation, such as dog sports, hiking, or herding-style games. Understimulation quickly leads to restlessness or unwanted barking.
The dense spitz double coat sheds heavily by season and needs frequent brushing during coat blow; weekly grooming suffices otherwise.
The independent Nordic temperament responds better to patient, consistent training than to strict command chains, which can be challenging for first-time owners.
The breed is considered largely healthy, with occasional hereditary eye conditions such as PRA as well as hip dysplasia.
