🐕 Medium · USA
A small, agile version of the Australian Shepherd with a colorful coat, a sharp mind, and a strong innate herding instinct that needs plenty of mental stimulation in daily life.

The Miniature American Shepherd is highly intelligent, alert, and strongly focused on its people, with a pronounced herding instinct that can extend to children or other pets. It is often reserved toward strangers.
As a herding dog in miniature form, it needs not just physical exercise but above all daily mental work through trick training, agility, or herding games. Under-stimulation quickly leads to nagging or herding behavior directed at people.
The medium-length double coat needs regular brushing, especially during shedding season, to prevent matting. Otherwise grooming needs are manageable.
Its high intelligence and pronounced need for occupation can easily overwhelm inexperienced owners, so prior knowledge of herding breeds is an advantage.
In some color variants with a double merle factor, vision and hearing problems can occur, which makes responsible breeding important. Eye disorders and patellar luxation also appear occasionally.
