🐾 Small · United Kingdom (England)
A sturdy, confident terrier from England's Lake District with a pronounced prey drive that needs activity and clear leadership.

The Lakeland Terrier is bold, independent, and spirited, typical of the terrier group. It shows a pronounced hunting and digging instinct and can be intolerant of other small animals.
Exercise needs are high; extensive walks and activity tasks are needed to avoid under-stimulation. Without adequate outlets the breed tends toward unwanted digging and barking behavior.
The wiry coat sheds very little but must be trimmed regularly and professionally shaped several times a year. Hand-stripping preserves the coat's texture better than clipping alone.
Only conditionally suitable for beginners, since consistent, terrier-appropriate training and regular coat care are required. Experience handling independent, prey-driven dogs is an advantage.
Breed-typical conditions include lens luxation, patellar luxation, and von Willebrand disease (a blood clotting disorder). A DNA test for lens luxation is recommended for breeding animals.
