Temperament & character

For centuries the Kuvasz was used to independently guard flocks against predators, making its own decisions without human direction. It is deeply loyal and affectionate toward its family, but naturally watchful and wary of strangers and unfamiliar dogs.

Exercise & stimulation

As a livestock guardian, the Kuvasz needs less athletic exertion and more room to patrol and meaningful guarding tasks. Long walks and access to a securely fenced property suit it better than pure dog-sport training.

Grooming

The dense, white double coat needs regular brushing, considerably more often during shedding season. Nails and ears should be checked routinely.

Suitable for beginners?

The strong protective instinct, size, and independent judgment make the Kuvasz a demanding breed that needs intensive early socialization and an experienced, calm owner.

Health & common problems

As a giant breed, the Kuvasz is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia as well as bloat, and its life expectancy is correspondingly lower than that of smaller breeds.

Good with: experienced owners with a house and property, not for beginners
