🐕 Medium · Finland
The Karelian Bear Dog is a Finnish hunting dog with a pronounced, independent hunting drive, originally used to hunt large game such as bears.
This breed is bold, self-assured, and highly independent, with a strongly developed hunting drive that is clearly visible even in everyday life. The Karelian Bear Dog is wary and alert toward strangers, and often dominant and uncompromising with other dogs. Toward its own family it is loyal, but remains a strong-willed character.
The breed needs a great deal of exercise and hunting-related or comparable activity to stay balanced; ordinary walks are not enough. Without meaningful outlets, it will find its own occupation, often in the form of hunting excursions on its own initiative. Securely fenced areas are important given its hunting passion.
The dense double coat needs regular brushing, several times a week during coat change. Otherwise grooming demands are manageable; the real challenge lies in temperament and training.
The pronounced, independent hunting drive and dominance toward other dogs make the Karelian Bear Dog a breed for very experienced, hunting-oriented owners. It is unsuitable for beginners or multi-dog households with smaller dogs.
The breed is considered robust and not very prone to hereditary disorders; hip dysplasia occurs occasionally. Injuries from hunting use should be checked after every outing.
