🐾 Small · United Kingdom
A small, sturdy working terrier with a strong prey drive and marked independence that needs consistent leadership and plenty of activity rather than a purely cuddly lifestyle.

The Jack Russell Terrier is bold, alert, and remarkably self-assured, carrying a strong hunting and earth-dog heritage. It bonds closely with its family but can be reserved to vocal toward strangers.
This breed needs several long, active walks daily along with tasks such as search or retrieving games, agility, or earth-dog work. Without enough stimulation, it tends toward restlessness and destructive behavior.
The short, smooth or slightly rough coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. A weekly check of teeth and nails is generally sufficient.
The pronounced prey drive, stubbornness, and high exercise needs overwhelm many first-time owners. Those willing to commit to consistent training and ample activity can handle the breed well.
Known conditions include hereditary lens luxation, patellar luxation, and a rare, late-onset hereditary ataxia. Eye screening and, where relevant, a genetic test for the ataxia mutation are recommended for breeding dogs.
