🐕 Medium · France (Vendée)
A wire-haired French scenthound with an excellent nose and a loud, deep bay, originally bred for pack hunting hare and wild boar, prone to following a trail for minutes on end.

Cheerful, sociable within a pack, and friendly toward people, yet stubborn once its nose has picked up a trail. Fond of barking and guided far more by scent than by eye contact.
Needs long daily walks with plenty of opportunity to sniff, plus tracking or mantrailing as species-appropriate occupation. Off-leash exercise should only happen in securely fenced areas, since it will follow its nose regardless.
The rough double coat needs weekly brushing and occasional trimming, and the pendant ears should be checked regularly for moisture and inflammation. Prone to weight gain if it does not get enough exercise.
Only conditionally suitable for beginners, since the strong hunting drive and stubbornness during trailing require patience and reliable off-leash recall at distance. A calm home with a garden is an advantage.
Ear infections are typical for the breed due to the drop ears, and hip dysplasia and patellar luxation also occur. Regular ear checks are part of basic care.
