🐕 Medium · Finland
A friendly Finnish herding and guard dog for reindeer herds with a dense, weatherproof coat and a balanced, remarkably adaptable temperament suited to everyday family life.

The Finnish Lapphund is friendly, calm, and open toward people and other dogs, unusually even-tempered for a Nordic herding breed. It is watchful and announces visitors without being overly suspicious. Its gentle, patient nature makes it a dependable family dog.
The breed needs regular but not extreme exercise compared to many other Nordic breeds. Herding tasks, sled-dog sports, or long hikes suit its nature well. Mental stimulation matters to it as much as physical exercise.
The dense double coat with abundant undercoat sheds heavily, especially during the twice-yearly coat blow, and needs frequent brushing then. In cold weather the breed's coat protects it excellently; in heat, shade and water should be available. Otherwise coat care is straightforward.
The Finnish Lapphund is considered good-natured, eager to learn, and adaptable, which makes it suitable for first-time dog owners too. Consistent training against excessive barking is worthwhile, since the breed is quite vocal. Overall, it is an easygoing, family-friendly companion.
The breed is considered robust, with hip dysplasia and the eye disease PRA occurring occasionally. Reputable breeders test the parent dogs accordingly. Overall, the breed's genetic diversity is comparatively good.
