Drever: temperament & character

Drevers are calm and balanced at home, but develop enormous drive and stamina on a trail. They are friendly, easy to handle, and show little aggression.

How much exercise does a Drever need?

Exercise needs are high; nose work and long walks are especially important, and without adequate outlets the Drever readily takes off after its own trails.

Drever: grooming & shedding

The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Given the short legs and long back, excess weight should be avoided.

Is the Drever suitable for beginners?

As a purebred hunting dog, the Drever needs experienced handling and plenty of exercise, but is uncomplicated in active hunting households or with tracking work.

Drever health problems

As with other short-legged scenthounds, there is an elevated risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD); otherwise the breed is considered robust and healthy.

The Drever sheds moderately and is only conditionally suitable for allergy sufferers. What matters is a contact test of several hours before getting one — not the amount of coat. The trigger, Can f 1, sits in saliva and dander.
