Temperament & character

The Cirneco dell'Etna is alert, independent and reserved with strangers, but affectionate and calm within the family. Its hunting instinct is strong and shows up even as a puppy.

Exercise & stimulation

As an original hunting breed, the Cirneco needs generous, ideally off-lead exercise, but should only run free in securely enclosed areas because of its prey drive. Restful periods indoors alternate with bursts of intense activity outdoors.

Grooming

The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. With little undercoat, the dog is sensitive to cold and needs extra protection in winter.

Suitable for beginners?

Because of its strong hunting drive and independence, better suited to experienced owners with a securely fenced property. Consistent recall training is essential.

Health & common problems

The Cirneco is considered one of the healthiest and most primitive breeds, with a low tendency toward hip dysplasia or hereditary disease. Because of its lean build and low body fat, it is sensitive to certain anesthetics.

Good with: Active owners with a garden, experienced hound owners
