🐕 Medium · Wales, United Kingdom
A short-legged, long-bodied herding dog with a sharp mind and strong drive to move, whose back requires care around jumping.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is intelligent, watchful and quick to bark, and rather reserved with strangers. As a herding breed it's sensitive to its surroundings and tends to try to control the movement of people or vehicles.
Despite its short legs, the Cardigan is very energetic and needs mental work such as herding, dog dancing or rally obedience alongside walks. Without enrichment, it easily develops unwanted herding behavior toward family members.
The dense, medium-length double coat sheds heavily seasonally and should be brushed weekly. Because of its long back, stairs, high jumps and excess weight should be avoided as much as possible.
Suitable for beginners interested in consistent training and enrichment, though plain walks won't satisfy this herding breed. Its tendency to bark should be addressed early.
The long back carries an elevated risk of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), and hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) also occur. Excess weight should be strictly avoided given the strain on the spine.
