Broholmer: temperament & character

Good-natured, calm and rarely aggressive despite its impressive size, while remaining watchful and protective of its family. Tends to meet strangers with quiet observation rather than excitement.

How much exercise does a Broholmer need?

Moderate but regular exercise is enough; intense sport or long sprints should be avoided because of the strain on the joints, especially during growth. Enjoys resting extensively indoors.

Broholmer: grooming & shedding

The short, dense coat is low-maintenance, but the sheer size brings high food costs and a correspondingly large space requirement. Jarring jumps and stairs should be avoided during puppyhood.

Is the Broholmer suitable for beginners?

Given its enormous size, weight and training needs, it requires an experienced owner who can physically manage the dog with confidence. Not suitable for small apartments.

Broholmer health problems

Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and bloat are the main risks for this deep-chested giant breed; several small meals and slow growth reduce the risk.

The Broholmer sheds moderately and is only conditionally suitable for allergy sufferers. What matters is a contact test of several hours before getting one — not the amount of coat. The trigger, Can f 1, sits in saliva and dander.

Good with: Experienced owners with plenty of space, calm families
