🐕🦺 X-Large · South Africa
The Boerboel is a massive South African farm and guard dog with a calm, self-assured temperament and a strong protective instinct toward its family.

Boerboels are calm, loyal, and deeply bonded to their family, while naturally watchful to wary toward strangers. Their enormous self-confidence and physical strength call for confident, consistent leadership, since an unclear hierarchy quickly leads to dominance issues. They are considered patient with familiar children but, given their size, should never be left unsupervised.
Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and activity are enough, as the breed is not an endurance athlete. More important than athletic exertion is thorough, early socialisation with people, dogs, and everyday situations. In heat, the Boerboel needs adequate shade and rest breaks due to its bulk.
The short coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing; the real effort lies in consistent training and socialisation throughout its upbringing. As a large guard dog, the Boerboel is subject in many regions to special ownership restrictions or licensing requirements.
The Boerboel is not suited to first-time owners; its size, strength, and pronounced protective drive require an experienced, physically capable handler. Lack of leadership can have serious consequences with this breed.
Like other large molossers, the Boerboel is prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and gastric torsion. Controlled growth in puppyhood, joint-friendly exercise, and several small meals help reduce the risk.
