🐕 Medium · France (Brittany)
A short-legged French scenthound from Brittany with a wiry, reddish-gold coat, a cheerful temperament, and a keen, constantly active nose for hunting.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is cheerful, lively, and sociable, yet independent and endowed with the typical scenthound stubborn streak. It generally gets along well with other dogs and loves company.
With its keen nose it eagerly follows trails and can tune out its surroundings when an interesting scent appears, so off-leash exercise is only advisable in securely fenced areas. Generous daily walks with opportunities to sniff are important.
The rough, wiry coat needs regular brushing and occasional trimming, but sheds little. The long pendant ears should be checked regularly to prevent infections.
Its pronounced hunting drive and independent mind call for patient, consistent training, so prior experience with scenthounds is an advantage.
The breed is considered robust and not very prone to illness; ear infections from the long pendant ears and back problems from the elongated body occur occasionally. Regular ear checks help prevent problems.
