🐕 Medium · France
The Basset Artésien Normand is a short-legged French scenthound with an outstanding nose, great stamina on the trail, and a friendly, easygoing temperament.

Despite its short legs, the Basset Artésien Normand is a passionate trailing hound with a keen nose, originally bred for small-game hunting on foot. At home it is affectionate, good-natured, and sociable, but once it picks up a scent it becomes single-minded and hard to distract.
Despite its build, the breed needs long daily walks with plenty of sniffing time, as well as the chance to use its nose and stamina on a trail. Off-leash exercise is advisable only in secure areas, given its strong attachment to scent trails.
The short, dense coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. The long pendant ears should be checked and cleaned regularly to prevent infections.
Its nose-driven stubbornness on the trail makes reliable recall difficult and can overwhelm beginners; patience with leash work is essential.
The long back and short legs make the breed prone to disc problems, and ear infections and weight gain from lack of exercise also occur.
