🐾 Small · Australia
A small, sturdy terrier from Australia with a rough, weatherproof coat, an alert nature, and a self-confidence that far outstrips its modest size.

The Australian Terrier is brave, sharp-witted and very affectionate with its family, while being reserved to wary toward strangers. True to terrier form, it is watchful and vocal about anything unusual. Despite its compact size, it has a strong sense of self and won't be intimidated by larger dogs.
Daily walks and occupation with scent work or small tasks keep the Australian Terrier satisfied. It is active but more easygoing than many other terriers and copes well with moderate exercise. Digging and chasing small rodents are among its natural preferences.
The harsh, wiry topcoat with a soft undercoat needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping, but changes little. The breed sheds very little, which can make it interesting for allergy sufferers. Teeth and ears should be checked regularly, as with many small breeds.
With clear, consistent training, the Australian Terrier is manageable even for first-time owners, though its terrier stubbornness demands patience. Excessive barking should be curbed early and gently. Socialization with other dogs and small pets should begin early.
The breed is considered robust and long-lived, with occasional cases of patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, or diabetes. Skin allergies occur from time to time. A reputable breeder screens the parent dogs accordingly.
