Temperament & character

Despite its small size, the Silky Terrier shows typical terrier self-confidence, staying watchful, affectionate with its family, and wary of strangers. It is sharp-witted and loves being the centre of attention.

Exercise & stimulation

Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and mental work are usually enough, though small rodents or birds instantly trigger its prey drive.

Grooming

The silky, smooth coat needs brushing several times a week to prevent matting, with professional trimming every few months to maintain its shape.

Suitable for beginners?

Because of terrier stubbornness and a tendency to yap, consistent, early training is important; suitable first-time owners should be prepared for training work.

Health & common problems

The breed is considered robust, with occasional cases of patellar luxation, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and diabetes. Dental care is important because of its small jaw.

Good with: apartment living, active singles and couples
