🐕 Medium · United States
A muscular American terrier with a high tolerance threshold toward people but a pronounced need for socialization with other dogs, subject to breed-specific legislation in parts of Germany.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is generally friendly and affectionate toward people but can display pronounced dominance behavior toward unfamiliar dogs. Early, consistent socialization is essential for sociable behavior.
The breed is powerful, has great stamina, and needs intense daily exercise along with muscle-building activity. Weight-pulling sports or controlled strength play with a person are well received.
The short, smooth coat is low-maintenance and needs only occasional brushing. Given its build, training volume should be adjusted during growth to avoid overloading the joints.
Not well suited to the inexperienced, since consistent training, safe management of dog encounters, and, in some German states, regulatory requirements (breed list, temperament test) are necessary. Handling this breed requires experience with powerful, strong-willed dogs.
Hip dysplasia, congenital heart defects, and hereditary cataracts have been described. Breeding stock should undergo cardiac and orthopedic examination.
