🐾 Small · Germany
A confident, terrier-like small dog with a strong independent streak, needing firm but loving guidance rather than harsh training.

Despite his small size, the Affenpinscher is confident, alert, and often quite strong-willed. He bonds closely with his family but stays reserved toward strangers. His wiry temperament is more reminiscent of a terrier than a typical lapdog.
Exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and short play sessions are usually sufficient. Mental stimulation through search games suits his curious, alert nature well.
The rough, wiry coat needs hand-stripping several times a year to preserve texture and color, with occasional brushing in between. Overall grooming effort is manageable but not negligible.
Because of his strong-willed character, the Affenpinscher is only conditionally suited to complete beginners. Consistent, patient training from puppyhood makes life together considerably easier.
Reported conditions include patellar luxation, an open fontanelle (molera) in some toy-sized individuals, and a tendency toward tracheal collapse. Dental misalignment is common due to the short muzzle.
