🐾 Small · England
An agile, spirited terrier with a strong hunting drive that needs plenty of exercise and stimulation, and can quickly become hard to manage without prior dog-training experience.
The Smooth Fox Terrier is bold, watchful, and impulsive, with a pronounced hunting and prey drive. It can be quarrelsome toward other dogs.
It needs vigorous daily exercise along with mental work, such as scent games or dog sports. Without enough of an outlet, it tends toward destructiveness and excessive barking.
The short, smooth coat is low-maintenance; occasional brushing is enough. Nails and ears should be checked regularly.
Its strong hunting drive and stubbornness call for consistent, experienced training starting in puppyhood. Inexperienced owners often underestimate how much stimulation this breed needs.
Breed-typical issues can include lens luxation and deafness linked to piebald coloring, as well as patellar luxation. Hearing tests for puppies and regular eye exams are recommended.
