Where can my dog run off-leash in Prenzlauer Berg?

Prenzlauer Berg has two fenced areas that the Pankow district office has opened to dogs. There your dog can run without a leash:

  • Dog run in Mauerpark. A fenced area of about 3,360 m² by Bernauer Straße. Outside the fence, the leash rule applies in the whole park.

Leash rules in Prenzlauer Berg

A leash rule has applied across Berlin since 1 January 2019 (section 28 of the Berlin Dog Act). Owners with a certificate of competence, or who already had their dog before 22 July 2016, are exempt. But the exemption does not apply everywhere.

In parks and green spaces the leash is always required, at most 2 m long. That includes Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg, Ernst-Thälmann-Park and squares such as Kollwitzplatz and Helmholtzplatz. Dogs are not allowed on playgrounds or sunbathing lawns at all (section 6 of the Green Spaces Act). Breaking the Green Spaces Act can cost up to 5,000 euros.

Short leash, at most 1 m: in stairwells and hallways, in shops, on buses and trains, at stops, in pedestrian zones and in crowds on streets and squares (section 29 (4) of the Dog Act).

Frequently asked
about Prenzlauer Berg

Where is the dog run in Mauerpark?

Mauerpark has a fenced dog run of about 3,360 m² by Bernauer Straße. Only there can your dog run off-leash. In the rest of the park the leash rule applies, and dogs are not allowed on playgrounds or marked sunbathing lawns. This is set out in the park rules of the Pankow district office.

Can my dog run off-leash in Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg?

No. The Pankow district office lists no off-leash area in Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg, so the leash rule applies as in all Berlin green spaces. The nearest fenced area is the dog meadow in Anton-Saefkow-Park.

Can my dog go off-leash if I have a dog licence?

On pavements and streets yes, if you carry your certificate of competence. In parks, green spaces, pedestrian zones, on buses and trains and in crowds the leash stays mandatory. Females in heat must always be on a leash (section 29 of the Berlin Dog Act).

Which cafes in Prenzlauer Berg allow dogs?

Prenzlauer Berg has 16 cafes, restaurants and bars listed that welcome dogs, including “Café Laelia”, “etc.” and “Häppies”. The full list with a map is free in the Souldog app. House rules can change, so a quick call ahead is worth it.
